Burns Photography website is getting a make-over! March 4, 2011

Filed under: Random thoughts — Burns Photography @ 6:58 pm

It started out as a small make-over. For the past year or so there have been little changes I wanted to make to our website. These thoughts and ideas sort of converged and grew over time to the point that over the last couple of months I’ve been in full, “we need an entirely new website!!” mode. While at WPPI I took this photo and for some reason I can’t really put a finger on, I fell in love, not so much with the actual photo but the feel of it. There was something so soft, dreamy, romantic, and gentle about it. Something that made me want to jump inside this photo and stay there for awhile. In many ways, it sort of became my inspiration for where I wanted to take the design of the website. The website isn’t quite ready yet but I thought I would share the photo that inspired the new site as a little preview of good things to come. Happy Friday! Keep Smiling, Summer

When I was little my mom used to describe nap time as an opportunity to recharge our batteries.  Well Vegas certainly can’t be described as nap time (why does sleep seem so hard to come by in that crazy town?), but it definitely was a chance to re-charge our batteries. I felt rejuvenated being able to learn and grow from all the amazing photographers who inspire me in this business. Plus, it’s always fun to walk around the trade show and see what’s fresh and upcoming in the wedding industry.

To be completely honest, I wasn’t even sure if I was going to make it this year. Of course I was dying to go, but the logistics of it had kept me on the fence. It was only after my husband’s encouragement and insistence that it was absolutely essential to my over-all well being that I attend, did I make the decision to go. He knew (as he usually does) exactly what I needed. It’s so amazing to take a little time to be inspired, encouraged, and refreshed. WPPI did all of these things and more. It reminded me exactly why I’m in love with this wonderful, crazy, sometimes stressful, but always rewarding business. I know that might sound a little bit like I was burnt out or something, which is FAR from the truth…I guess it’s just really hard for me to find the words to explain it. I love what I do and I feel so blessed to be able to do it! I’m in love with photography and people and photographing people. It’s going to be an exciting year! Keep Smiling, Summer

I know these aren’t the best photos but here are some of those people who inspire me immensely (this is not a complete list by any means):

Jerry Ghionis

Nigel Barker

Jasmine Star

Mike Larson

Jose Villa, Mike Colon (hidden in this photo but he is totally on my list of inspiring photographers), Summer Watkins, Amanda from 100layercake, Heather from Style Unveiled and Jesh de Rox

On this trip we were also on a mission to put our KISS sticker in creative places. Give us a challenge and we are on it!

We had a little time before catching our flight so of course we did what we pretty much always do when we have some free time, took photos of anything and everything!

What can I say? I’m easily amused.

A look back at 2010 February 10, 2011

Wow! What a year it was. I know we have said it before but we really do feel so lucky to get to work with so many amazing people. We so appreciate you letting us into your lives and allowing us to capture your special moments. Here are some of our favorite moments from 2010 (the song is pretty short so there wasn’t time to add in everything and everyone who made 2010 so great but we did our best). Keep Smiling, Summer

Gracefully Girly February 8, 2011

It was like a walk in the park with friends. Well, a walk in the park in beautiful dresses, accessorized perfectly with gorgeous girly things, cameras following us around, and people giving us a full range of stares. This shoot could have been a bit of a disaster with four girls who usually make their mark behind the camera stepping in front of it to model. But, as it turns out, it was this very knowledge and expertise they have making other people camera ready that was priceless for our shoot. Hannah acted as our amazing make-up artist/model while Jen and Ashleigh were our professional hair-stylists/models. Without them we could not have accomplished this shoot so I really want to thank them for being so all around fabulous. And I know that word is totally overplayed but in this one instance, I think it completely applies. Kimberlee, your accessories are beautiful. It makes me wish I could be a bride all over again thinking about all the adorable things I should have had at my wedding!! And Karin, it’s probably a bit silly to say it on our blog, but your photography blows me away. Keep Smiling, Summer

And I need to thank my beautiful friends who acted as models for this fun shoot. What can I say? You are honestly amazing!! Keep Smiling, Summer

Surrounded by Sycamores-Jessica and Jason Chico Engagement Session-San Diego-The Crossings at Carlsbad Wedding January 24, 2011

Filed under: Engagement Session,Portrait Session — Burns Photography @ 3:54 am

Jessica and Jason had a chance meeting when Jessica’s roommate at Cal State Long Beach, asked Jessica to go to a sorority dance with her roommate’s hockey playing boyfriend’s best friend. Sound a little complicated? Well her roommate’s boyfriend didn’t want to go to the dance without a guy friend in tow.

Jessica loves dancing, spent years on competitive dance teams and is always game to dance, so she kindly agreed to oblige her roommate.  Jason just happened to be the captain of the Cal State LB Ice Hockey team and was drop dead gorgeous….hmmm…. things could be worse for Jessica.  Jason, being the good sport that he is, went along with the idea.  I don’t know if Jason knew it was going to be a dress up as a famous couple dance, and they would be going as Ricky and Lucy. The red wig didn’t make it into the equation but the polka dotted dress was pretty darn cute.

Their romance ensued and Jessica decided to really test the waters with her new beau by bringing him on a family camping trip to Lake Almanor.  She knew if Jason survived a week with no showers, funky bathrooms, and a wacky family and friends, he would be destined to be a member of the clan forever.  His quiet hockey player demeanor and patience allowed him to overcome all obstacles and he came through the week with flying colors.

They both graduated from CSLong Beach.  Jessica moved on to USC to complete her Masters degree and is now working with special needs children.  Jason is enjoying his return to school for his new career.

Jason surprised Jessica with a romantic proposal at Christmas while on a vacation in Hawaii.  She couldn’t understand why he wouldn’t get in the ocean…the engagement ring was in his pocket and he kept making ridiculous excuses for not getting wet while he tried to find the perfect place to propose.

Jessica has found the man of her dreams and is certainly deserving of such a wonderful sweet caring man.  Jason is blessed to have an intelligent, clever, beautiful, and fun loving bride to be. Their engagement session was lots of fun and full of laughs.  They decided to make the trip up north because they love Bidwell Park and wanted to see fall colors, something that is lacking where they live in southern California.

Their wedding will be at the beautiful ‘Crossroads’ in Carlsbad, Ca. It will certainly be an affaire to remember. We thank Jessica and Jason for giving us the opportunity to capture their day for them.           ~With much love, Karin

Michelle+Jon: Chico Engagement Session January 14, 2011

Thinking about what I could possible say to describe this engagement session, I kept coming back to one word. This word swirled around in my head as I edited these photos and tried desperately to narrow down the hundreds of favorites that I had for the blog. And the more I thought about this word, the more absolutely perfect it felt to describe this session and these truly amazing people. The word? Enchanting. The tress were enchanting, and the vineyards, and of course the huge monastery windows with their magical light, and of course Michelle and Jon were every bit the enchanting couple. Michelle and Jon quite literally steal your heart with their love for each other and the kindness they share. To say this engagement session was a delight is an understatement and  it makes me so excited for their fabulous wedding! Keep Smiling, Summer

Jessica+Jason Engagement Session Sneak Peek December 24, 2010

Filed under: Engagement Session — Burns Photography @ 6:56 am

It just feel like a sneak peek kinda day and since this whole session won’t be blogged until after the holidays, here is a little preview of things to come!

Happy Holidays from Burns Photography! December 22, 2010

Filed under: Random thoughts — Burns Photography @ 10:37 pm

With the year almost over, Christmas right around the corner, and wedding season coming to a close it feels like time to exhale. Deeply. And reflect. Looking back, this year has been so many, many things. Personally, its been a year of big changes, big challenges and big growth (which I guess often goes hand in hand with big challenges right?). Professionally, this year was absolutely amazing!! I really don’t know how we were blessed with so many absolutely divine clients. I felt like pinching myself daily. Getting to make a living doing what I love? Well it just doesn’t get much better than that. Having the opportunity to meet so many fun, interesting people and getting to share in the big moments of their lives leaves me at a loss for words. I just wanted to take a moment to thank each and every person that made this year so meaningful to me. I am humbled and very very appreciative at how each and every one of you touched my life and made my year. Here’s wishing all of you and your loved ones a very Happy Holiday Season and a joyous New Year!!! Keep Smiling, Summer
